We have two classes in Reception. The class teachers are:

We also have four brilliant teaching assistants who support us:

  • Mrs Hough is based in RT

  • Miss Hollender is based in RC

  • Miss Smith supports in both classes

Phonics

Essential Letters and Sounds (ELS) is our chosen Phonics programme. The aim of ELS is ‘Getting all children to read well, quickly’. It teaches children to read by identifying the phonemes (the smallest unit of sound) and graphemes (the written version of the sound) within words and using these to read words.

Children will only read books that are entirely decodable, meaning that they know all of the graphemes within the book. The children take home a fully-decodable book each week to practise applying their newly-attained phonic knowledge.

We only use pure sounds when decoding words (no ‘uh’ after the sound). We must use pure sounds when we are pronouncing the sounds and supporting children in reading words. If we mispronounce these sounds, we will make reading harder for our children. Please watch the videos below for how to accurately pronounce these sounds.

Baseline Assessment

All children participate in the Reception Baseline Assessment (RBA) within the first six weeks of starting school.

The RBA is a short, interactive and practical assessment of your child’s early literacy, communication, language and mathematics skills when they begin school, using materials that most children of your child’s age will be familiar with. It became statutory for all schools from September 2021.
